A cuppa with...Emily & Jean Scriven from Pixie Bakes

January 26, 2023

Tell us about your business, service or endeavour...

We are a small coffee shop based in the village of Tintwistle, run by a mother/daughter team.  We opened in June 2018 and so are just entering our fourth year of trading.  We pride ourselves on our home-made cakes and our small menu of home made lunches - and it's important to say that we are a solely vegetarian/vegan establishment.  We also use coffee roasted right here in the High Peak by Peak Bean.

When we opened, our aim was to provide somewhere nice to sit and enjoy a coffee and cake in Tintwistle, which we hope we continue to do.

What makes our business unique...

We are a vegetarian/vegan establishment and a vegan-owned business.  We make absolutely all our cakes, lunches and soups here on the premises and it has been said that we make the best Mac'n'Cheese in town!

How do you feel about the future of the town and what would you like to see happen in Glossop?

We would love to see Glossop maintaining its lovely, unique high street into the future and it would be great to see tourism promoted to bring visitors to the town.

Before we opened Pixie Bakes, we sold our home-made scones at farmer's markets, including the one in Glossop - but much more could have been done to promote and nurture it.

Glossop could have the most amazing farmer's market which would bring shoppers to the town with some careful investment and care.

What inspires you about Glossop?

The most inspiring thing to us about Glossop is the high street full of fantastic, independent shops, restaurants and bars.  The beautiful surrounding countryside goes without saying!

Could you recommend to our readers three local businesses you love and why?

There are many local businesses we would highly recommend but if we can only choose three, they would be the following:   Daddy Cools Chilli Sauces - Based in Tintwistle and owned by the very hard working Steve and Annette Cooley.  We sell and use Steve's products...they're all amazing and he has won many awards for them.

Pepino Deli - We love Pepino Deli as they have a similar ethos to ourselves and make great vegan food which we love.  They also worked very hard during lockdown supplying meals to key workers and those in need.

Glossop Wholefoods - We love this shop as it is so unique and they also have a great ethos and work hard to provide the best vegan products and be as environmentally friendly as possible.
