A LOCAL WINTER STORY TRAIL

January 26, 2023

Dedicated to the memory of the late Dame Hilary Mantel

This year's magical campaign by Glossop Creates will have a literary twist!

The festive winter trail is back for the second year running and, this Christmas, the activity will focus on the magical art of storytelling.

Showcasing the talents of local writers, authors, performers and poets and utilising the high street windows of shops and venues in the town centre, the sparkling story-led trail will take participants on a literary journey around Glossop.

24 local writers will be tasked with weaving a winter tale - via a creative story, poem or graphic novel - based on the shop or business they are paired with. The stories will be displayed in the windows of the 24 local businesses, which will include Dark Peak Books, George Street Community Bookshop, Decor8. The Bureau and Pepino. Writers already onboard with the project include Mark Henderson, Michelle Collier and Keli Tomlin, with many special guests to follow. Local actor Julie Hesmondhalgh will also take part.

Like last year's activity, the Winter Story Trail will feature a map that can be collected from KIN.DER, the independent bookshops in Glossop and the local libraries, and families can take part in the activity by finding all the windows and filling in a word from each which will spell out a specially commissioned 24 word poem.

The trail - which will also celebrate the creative legacy of Dame Hilary Mantel - will launch on 26th November as part of the Christmas Lights Switch On. It will run throughout the festive season until 6th January 2023.

And, as an added extra, the short stories will be made into a beautiful printed book and made available to download, so participants and lovers of literature can keep the stories forever.

Claire Tymon from LOCAL, which runs Glossop Creates, said: "A Local Winter Story Trail will be truly magical and we cannot wait for this campaign to come together. Glossop boasts huge talent in the literary space, with writers, storytellers, authors, script writers and poets all living in our town. This year, we all mourned the loss of Dame Hilary Mantel, who hailed from Hadfield and attended St. Charles Primary School like myself. Hilary wrote a plethora of wonderful novels, two of which won the Booker Prize, so it seems fitting to dedicate this year's festive creative activity to her literary genius. It will be wonderful to see the high street brought to life at Christmas through storytelling and imagination.

"The trail will also help to showcase Glossop as a destination for cultural activities, art and creativity."

Glossopdale writers and local businesses in the town centre who’d like to take part in the campaign can get in touch with the team at hello@wearelocal.org.uk or access the brief here.
