A new era for Glossop's book lovers

January 26, 2023

Melanie O'Brien takes us through the rebrand from Bay Tree Books to Dark Peak Books - and a new era for the legendary high street bookshop

Bookshops have always been a haven for me, and one of the things I really loved about Glossop when I moved here 14 years ago was that it had a brilliant independent bookshop on the High Street. Who knew one day it would be mine?

When I took over Bay Tree Books, I didn't have a clue what I was doing, so as I'd inherited such a great legacy, I decided not to change anything at first while I learned the ropes. Now that I've owned the business for nearly a year, I felt it was the right time to put my own stamp on things and make it mine.

I knew I wanted to change the name, but was struggling to come up with something good. My surname doesn't lend itself well to a shop name. My son suggested 'Mama's Books' which I thought was brilliant but not quite right. I was drinking with other booksellers at London Book Fair in April and got to talking about what I love about our local area and why I have made a home here. I told them about our beautiful hills, bleak yet stunning, and how we're the gateway to the Dark Peak. As soon as I said it the name fell into place!

I wanted the branding to be based in blue and gold, and gave my initial ideas to David Hart who is a brilliant logo designer. My new signage was made by David Thomas. We are really lucky to have such talented, creative people in Glossop. I also want to shout out to Decor8 for my paint and Glossop Carpet Centre for the carpet in the children's room, and Mat Tattum of Peak Promotions for applying the new branding to my website. Matt Hill and the Balloon Bar have also helped with the re-brand. I've tried to keep things as local as possible.

Going forward, I would really like to set up more events to keep children reading. I'm looking into running an 8-12 and a teen book club. Bedtime stories will be returning, and I'll be looking to work with publishers to bring more author events to Glossop. Watch this space!
