Glossop's independent shops are unique, quirky and wonderful - but many of them also support local makers by stocking and selling their preserves, soy candles, artworks, creations and more. From The Bottle Store selling spirits from Tameside, Harvey Leonard's stocking a range of local beers, Dark Peak Books stocking works by local authors and The Artful Pigeon Gallery and Dandelion Crafts playing host to gifts, prints, ceramics, homewares and glass works from local artists and creatives, shopping in Glossop and its surrounding villages means that your money not only helps the shop owners and employees, it also goes to the town's growing melting pot of creative talent.
These purchases mean that the makers can keep making, and the shops can stay on the high street. It all adds up to boosting the local economy and ensuring the longevity of our wonderful collection of independent shops, venues and retailers...
With fuel prices rocketing, there has never been a better time to shop local. Ditch the car, jump on the bus or train and have a mooch without parking costs and petrol money.. As an additional aside, shopping locally reduces your eco impact all round which is kinder to the planet. You'll reduce emissions and your carbon footprint, all in one go.
Buying locally made or grown goods also means that the products didn't have to travel as far to get to the high street, too, so it's a win-win all round.
Research by 4CG, a Co-operative organisation, found that, when we shop locally, the profits are reinvested time and time again within a rural community. Every pound spent is then spent again by the owner and employees of the shop or venue - meaning that £100 spent in a local store contributes, on average, £600 to the local economy. 4CGm's research also found that the same amount in a large supermarket contributes just 25p. With staggering figures like that, there is no better time to support your local independents by shopping locally and creating a resilient local economy.
What's more, your investment into the community will boost the local high street which has a snowball effect and attracts more indie shops to the area.
Shopping in Glossop can be a lovely day out in summer - combine your mooch on the high street - shopping trip and people-watching in the sunny Norfolk Square with lunch out with a Harvey Leonard's charcuterie board (and sneaky glass of wine), an artisan pizza from The Oakwood, a vegan gyros from Pepino or a veggie salad from Shepley's as you gaze at the river, and you're guaranteed a great day out! We really do boast a wonderful selection of independent cafes and pubs, so you'll always be spoilt for choice.
