Glossop Creates - a summer update!

January 26, 2023

By Glossop Creates' founder, Claire Tymon

June 2022

"As we approach the summer solstice, it feels like a nice time of year to shine a light on our achievements and also to share some updates with our community on what we're aiming to accomplish over the next year.

"2021 was very much a year to find our feet, understand how best we are able to support our local creative community and settle into a rhythm of work and collaborations to achieve our ideas and activities. With some funding from the local authority and Arts Council, we recruited a small team of local freelance creatives to provide skills and capacity to bring the Glossop Creates brand to life and to build confidence and create a sense of community across Glossopdale.

"We've achieved so much in a short amount of time and with very little resources but a huge amount of passion and commitment to our local creative community. In 12 months we've delivered five mentoring opportunities, three artist residencies, a handful of networking events and countless blogs and articles showcasing the work of local, talented creatives and independent businesses. We've established a new creative cooperative space called KIN.DER in which everyone is welcome to call in and say hello! As KIN.DER we've launched a special quarterly zine, artist-led walks and a shop filled with locally-designed and made products.

"In November, we launched the first edition of the Winter Art Trail, commissioning new work for shop windows on the high street, promoting both local artists and creatives as well as the independent business community. We also commissioned a new poem, and this project gave us confidence to apply to the Derbyshire Mainframe awards, where we were shortlisted for Best Creative Startup.

"I understood that, to make Glossop Creates a sustainable initiative for the town, we needed to retain the team delivering the magic it creates, and the passion and vision that comes with this. So in November I established Local with Steven Dexter; a new organisation that works in many localities but its heart and ethos remains in Glossopdale. This is our home.

"Establishing Local has enabled us to maintain the Glossop Creates initiative and start to build strategic relationships across Glossopdale, High Peak and Derbyshire. Our hope and desire is to collaborate more with the local creative community and independent businesses, promote the talent and skills in the area, create space for everyone to connect and collaborate, share stories and achievements, and create opportunities for new events and creative workspaces.

"We've recently submitted an application to Arts Council of England to enable us to sustain our work to date and build on the mentoring, networking and artist residency programme and commission a refreshed website. We're hoping to commission artists to work with Glossopdale Furniture Project, Friends of Glossop Train Station, the Peak District National Park and the Bureau. We'd love to deliver a new Winter Art Trail and connect with neighbouring communities in Hayfield and Broadbottom on new projects. We're supporting Derbyshire County Council on a research report on creative co-working spaces across four towns in High Peak and Derbyshire Dales. We continue to advocate for creative spaces and programming in the new Town Hall / Market Hall complex. And we're talking to the Friends of Victoria Hall about its future potential.

"If you have an idea for a new project or business, or need advice on funding, marketing or collaboration, or require space to run workshops, please get in touch with the Glossop Creates team either via social media or at hello@glossopcreates.com

"If you have a business or creative practice and would like to promote your work, please upload a profile on our website. If you're planning events or workshops, you can also promote these on our website. https://www.glossopcreates.com/

"And if you're a Glossop business owner and would be interested in sponsoring one of Glossop Creates' campaigns of projects, drop us a line. We are currently working on a range of packages and would be open to discussing ideas.

"Or, if you'd just like to drop in for a brew and chat, keep an eye out for drop-in times - they'll be promoted soon! We're open to ideas, to collaborating - and cake!"

All the best.
