Glossop Creates is adding a sparkle of creativity to the town's festive proceedings with the Love Glossop Winter Art Trail.

Funded by High Peak Borough Council utilising Welcome Back funding, the Love Glossop Winter Art Trail launched on 27th November, coinciding with the Christmas lights switch on in Norfolk Square. The art trail encompasses 24 local business windows on the high street, which have been paired with local artists to create a town centre exhibition where Glossop is the gallery. In addition, there will be an animated light projection in the town centre, featuring designs created during workshops with local art groups, run by Glossop Arts Project in collaboration with KIN.DER, Glossop's new creative cooperative space. The work that the group created was brought to life by local animator Owain Paciuszko.

The inspiration behind the window designs came from a specially commissioned poem about hope and resilience by local author Mark P Henderson. One word from the 24 word poem will be hidden in each of the 24 window destinations along the High Street. As audiences follow the art trail, the poem will be slowly revealed. Glossop Creates has commissioned a map, designed by local artist Michelle Lyons, which can be picked up from KIN.DER by families on the evening of the lights switch on, encouraging them to join in and follow the trail around the town centre.

Participating artists are all local and include illustrator Chellie Carroll, street artist Deggy, author and artist Michael Howard, sculptor Brian Fell and renowned painter Ghislaine Howard. Featured local businesses include Glossop Wholefoods, Bay Tree Books, Pepino Deli,Underwood Tattoos, Cask & Kitchen, Hyssop, Mettricks, Napoli and Harvey Leonard‚Äôs.

Lighting up Glossop's high street throughout December, the 24 windows will be lit up in the evenings, creating a beautiful festive walk around the town centre, showcasing the wonderful creative talent the town boasts and highlighting the fantastic range of independent local businesses that Glossop has on its high street and surrounding areas. The Winter Art Trail will run throughout the Christmas period and finish on 3rd January.

Glossop Creates is inviting everyone participating in the Winter art trail to share their trail discoveries on social media using the hashtag #LoveGlossopWinterArtTrail and to submit their completed poem to @glossopcreates via DM on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. In the new year one correct entry will be chosen at random by Glossop Creates, with the winner receiving a £20 voucher to spend at Bay Tree Books.

The Winter Art Trail builds on Glossop Creates' advent calendar that promoted local businesses across social media channels last Christmas, and the Love Glossop theme follows the summer campaign by Dark Peak Press and Glossop Creates (Love Glossop, Support Local), that bolstered the town's independent businesses during a challenging time.      

Claire Tymon, who heads up Glossop Creates, said: "This fabulous piece of festive activity is designed to welcome everyone back to the high street during the Christmas season - a key time to support local businesses and independent makers. The project also aims to utilise the creative talent in the town to help reanimate the heritage and history of Glossop.  

"We aim to engage local community groups as well as artists and businesses, to ensure the Winter Art Trail is inclusive and supports various elements of the town.  

"We are so proud of Glossop and its wonderful creative community, and we hope that the event will encourage even more collaboration within the town as we go forward into 2022."  

The maps can be collected from Saturday (27th November) at KIN.DER in Glossop Gasworks on Arundel Street (next to Aldi), which will be illuminated in the evening for the occasion. KIN.DER, alongside many other high street shops will be open during the evening to celebrate the event. The map will also be available to download from the Glossop Creates website from Saturday.
