Pairings residency aims to get Glossop digging for treasure!
Glossop Creates is excited to announce the second residency of the 2023 Pairings Programme.
The Pairings Programme is a series of residencies, curated by Glossop Creates, that take an action-research approach. Through the programme we pair artists with local organisations, initiatives and themes to develop ideas and creative methodologies, whilst creating high quality work that increases engagement with our culture and local environment.
For this Pairings project, we have commissioned archeologist Tim Campbell-Green and paired him up with The Living Room; Glossop’s digital, community archive where residents and visitors can explore and document the past and present in a unique way together. Find out more about The Living Room here.
Tim aims to get as many Glossopdale residents as he can physically involved in the heritage of our beautiful area with a Big Dig. Tim shared his residency plans with us; “I believe heritage is for everyone, and that the past is not just tied up with upstanding buildings and less than thrilling ‘histories’, but that even the smallest object can tell a fascinating story. With that in mind I’d like everyone to get their hands dirty and look for a ‘bit of history’ – emphasis on the word ‘bit – in ‘Glossop's Big Dig 2023’.
“The idea behind the Big Dig is a very simple one: the history of Glossop is all around us, in our parks, footpaths, and gardens, beneath our feet as we walk about. The Big Dig is a chance for you to not only get involved in it, and experience it first hand, but also to perhaps change our understanding of Glossop’s past.”
Tim will be developing ‘Glossop’s Big Dig 2023 collection kits’ for individuals to pick up, taking you through the step-by-step of mudlarking! Tim continues; “Pick a favourite spot – your back garden, a park, a footpath, a molehill, anywhere within Glossop. Have a close look in the soil and see what you can find – pottery, glass, stone, metal, leather – there is lots to see all over Glossop.
“Bag it, make a note of where you found it, and bring it along to an event where we can look at what you have found. We’ll be providing special “Glossop’s Big Dig 2023” collection kits to help you along.”
Anyone who joins in with the ‘Big Dig’ will be able to drop physical pieces off at Glossop Library. Photographs and stories from your mudlarking adventures can be submitted by anyone to The Living Room. Tim will also be sharing data on the pieces found on The Living Room, where you can learn more about the materials that you discovered, and help to fill out a picture of Glossop’s past. Tim also has plans to run public workshops, walks or making sessions to engage more people in the ‘Big Dig’ - keep an eye on glossopcreates.com for information and dates to be released soon.
Would you like to be involved in ‘Glossop’s Big Dig 2023’? Sign up to our mailing list to make sure you don’t miss out on where and when to pick up your Glossop’s Big Dig 2023 Collection Kit.
Tim would love to speak with local people and organisations, with an interest in the ‘big dig’, or local heritage and archaeology that could inform his Pairings Residency.
