Walking Artist, activist and writer Morag Rose is the latest artist in residence at George Street Community Bookshop. Morag will be creating a new multisensory performance tour exploring The People's Guide to Glossop. It will weave together personal testimonies, local history, folklore and social observation for a walk that is poetic, participatory, entertaining and inspiring.

The tours will be the culmination of a series of events exploring the art and politics of walking.  

The residency kicks off tomorrow - Thursday 10th November - at 5.30pm with a talk entitled What is Psychogeography? An Introduction to Radical Walking.  

Saturday 12th November 2-4pm sees a discussion about Walking in Art and Literature. There, Morag will be collecting stories to help build up a unique psychogeographical tour of Glossop.  

The walks will take place on 17th and 21st December, with an online event on December 20th. More details will be available nearer the time as the walk will be shaped by the stories Morag collects.   Morag‚Äôs work draws on over 15 years experience as a pioneering walking artist alongside skills and knowledge gained as a community worker and activist. In 2016 she founded acclaimed psychogeographical collective The LRM (Loiterers Resistance Movement).

The LRM Manifesto says: ‚ÄúThe LRM (Loiterers Resistance Movement) is a Manchester based collective of artists and activists interested in psychogeography, public space and the hidden stories of the city. We can‚Äôt agree on what psychogeography means but we all like plants growing out of the side of buildings, looking at things from new angles, radical history, drinking tea and getting lost; having fun and feeling like a tourist in your home town. Gentrification, advertising and blandness make us sad. We believe there is magic in the Mancunian rain. Our city is wonderful and made for more than shopping. We want to reclaim it for play and revolutionary fun. On the first Sunday of every month we go for a wander of some sort and we organise occasional festivals, exhibitions, spectacles and random shenanigans. Everyone is welcome to join us.‚Äù  

   Through The LRM, Morag organises public walks, d√©rives (drifts), tours, games and spectacles which offer new ways to explore the everyday. They include games of CCTV Bingo, giant cake maps, musical treasure hunts, tracing lost rivers and mapping the architecture of fear.

‍What is Psychogeography?   Psychogeography is about the relationships between people and place and is part of a dynamic and inclusive walking art movement. Inspired by The Situationist International (SI), this work has an explicit aim to uncover the power dynamics that shape our world and offer alternative ways to view where we live.   Every step we take together creates new connections and an emotional remapping that inspires different ways to explore and imagine the world. The LRM brings people together to wander, play, learn and embrace the possibilities our streets offer. We are not-for-profit and our events are always free and open to everyone.   Morag has exhibited, published and performed her work widely. Most recently she has worked with Walk The Plank to celebrate Manchester‚Äôs waterways and been part of the #WalkCreate project exploring walking, wellbeing and community during Covid-19.
