WAN.DER - JOIN US FOR THE SECOND CURATED WALK WHICH EXPLORES THE LIFE OF WITTGENSTEIN

January 26, 2023

After a hugely successful first WAN.DER, KIN.DER and Glossop Creates have teamed up with artist, art historian and local creative, Michael Howard, to curate a new walk in the footsteps of Austrian born philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein.

Wittgenstein is considered to be one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century; elusive, compelling and inspirational, his writings read more like those of a poet or visionary rather than an academic. It can be argued that one of the key turning points in his life took place as he worked and walked in the hills above Glossop.

Wittgenstein had arrived in England determined to design, build and fly an aeroplane - propelled by a jet engine designed by himself. He attached himself to Manchester Victoria University as an informal research assistant, and spent some time on the Derbyshire moors at Chunal. There was a meteorological observation point, and his job was to design and construct box kites to enable students and send their experiments up to a height of 5,000 feet.

He lodged at The Grouse Inn, which was an isolated roadside pub, two miles south of Glossop.

The WAN.DER will be led by Michael Howard, an art historian, artist and writer who has lived in Glossop for over 35 years. He has a particular interest in, and love for, our local landscape.

The Wittgenstein WAN.DER will take place on Sunday 26 June, 10am-1pm. Places are limited so make sure to book quickly! £5 booking fee.

Michael will also be giving a talk on Wittgenstein's time at Chunal. It will take place at Glossop Labour Club on Wednesday 22 June at 7.00 pm. Booking is essential and all are welcome.
