Women of the Valley

July 16, 2024

Longdendale Tales summer series continues with uncovered history

This July, the creative community of Glossop has been bringing Woodhead Chapel back to life with a series of curated, unique events blending music, photography, poetry, history, theatre and more.

On 22nd July, the series continues with an event called “Women of the Valley” which looks at notable women from Glossop from the 1700’s right up until the 1970’s.

Featuring poetry, music and textiles, local expert Kate Raine uncovers the stories of the women often ignored in the history books on Longdendale's milltowns.

Textile artist in residence Sue Reddish will reveal the meaning behind her latest work on display in the chapel, plus what and who inspired it.

Guests at the event will also rediscover the songs and stories left behind by the Irish residents who built the Woodhead Railway line; and there's poetry and live music from the all-female acapella group Rum Baba and actor Amy Skogen.

Notable women that will be discussed during the event include Lady Howard, who established the first cottage hospital in Glossop, Anne Kershaw Wood who was made first lady Freeman of the Borough in 1910 for her charitable work in the town and suffragette Florence French.

The Longdendale Tales Art Collective is a group of artists, musicians and producers based in and around Glossop, led by curator Clare Savory. They have come together to share and collaborate their skills in providing arts and cultural events in the local area. This is an opportunity to spend time in a Peak District local landmark that has been seldom visited over the last five centuries.
