Brian Fell is a maker, first and foremost. His wide range of interests span architecture, engineering, nature and music. He moves easily between abstraction and figuration, believing that the two disciplines feed one another and that each brings distinct but related intellectual artistic challenges. Since 2011, George Fell, Brian’s son has worked in partnership with him as his studio assistant on major commissions. Over the years he has developed remarkable technical ability and practical skill borne out of a familiarity with and a love for his material of choice – steel. Fell creates his sculpture through the unusual technique of cold forging. The steel is never heated but shaped by being beaten with hammers or bent using levers and vices. This physical making process is an important part of his artistic practice. There are two distinct strands to Brian Fell’s practice. He is best known for his landmark figurative public sculpture; however, his abstract compositions in steel are paper are the foundation of everything he does.
