As part of a series of local curated walks, archeologist and local history buff, Dr. Tim Campbell-Green, has meandered and mooched around Melandra, taking in some incredible history on the way.
The Melandra Meander is the fourth in a series of journals called Where/When, presented by The Journal of Archaeological Wandering, that Tim has been curating, printing, and selling via Dark Peak Books on High Street West.
He tells us more about his fourth curated Where/When walk, which could be a great way to include some family bonding time over Christmas - while getting some much-needed fresh air!
Tim says: “This issue and walk takes us on a carefully planned walk from Melandra Roman fort to St. Michael and All Angels, Mottram, and back again via Broadbottom. It explores the history and archaeology of what we see along the way, and hopefully points out things that might not be obvious, or well known.
“This is a Wander, not a walk or a hike, and encourages you to explore, not just eat up the miles, and instead to take your time and see what you can see. It is a moderate walk, so no big hills or dodgy bits. It takes in long forgotten wells, a Roman fort, medieval trackways, 19th century graverobbing, a 15th century church, holloways, Victorian architecture, and geological anomalies - this Wander really has it all!
“It's actually the fourth in a series of walks, all local (so far) that explores both place and past, and hopefully, our place within these. The meander takes in:
#1 - Ashes, Arches, and Harehills - A walk from Glossop, up to Ashes, Dinting, and down through Adderley Place, back to Glossop. Via Roman Roads, medieval tracks, Victorian railway viaducts, and Tudor (almost) Saints.
#2 - Of Bulls and Bees - A Wander from the Bulls Head, Old Glossop, to The Beehive in Whitfield, taking in All Saints, Glossop Hall, township boundaries, Roman roads, medieval field systems, and 17th century houses.
#3 - Of Hives and Heads - A return Wander from The Beehive, Whitfield, to the Bulls Head, Old Glossop using entirely different medieval trackways, and taking in Whitfield Anglo Saxon cross, standing stones, hidden footpaths, a remnant of the last ice age, a cold war observation post, bench marks, graffiti, and more medieval fields.
The price per journal is £5 each, and all four are available from Dark Peak Books, High Street West, Glossop, or to order directly from the website: glossopcuriosities.co.uk/where-when
