Street artist Deggy, who made his name with the mural of Dame Vivienne Westwood in Glossop town centre, has confirmed his debut exhibition entitled “The Class of May 19th”.
Deggy, who is also a guitarist in “dirty rock and roll & blues” touring band, Gorilla Riot, is centering his exhibition on his graffiti-style portraits of notable rock and roll figures who share his birthday - May 19th. The debut event will take place at Harvey Leonard’s Wine & Ale Tasters on Norfolk Street.
Deggy said: “Being a musician, I have always been intrigued with some of the notable figures I share a birthday with and - turning 30 this year - it made total sense at this point in my life to celebrate that by producing an exciting new collection of work to display for my first solo show.
“Let's just say, we have a really cool mix of rock n roll royalty from ACDC, The Ramones, ZZ Top and The Who just to get started - and I will be displaying my portraits of these legends at the exhibition. This event is something that I originally considered hosting in Manchester, but the more I thought about it, more cool and creative stuff needs to happen in Glossop, and I'd love for my hometown to be the place my first exhibition opens its doors!”
As well as touring with his band and creating large-scale street art, Deggy also works with local children, bringing his own brand of art and creativity to the local area.
“I have just finished several projects at the local youth centre in Gamesley where local kids and I have created some Man City and Man United Andy Warhol-inspired portraits for the community’s astro turf pitches” said Deggy.
“This has been quite important as the area doesn't get loads of funding, and the fact the kids have painted the pieces themselves during some half term sessions gives them ownership of their local area. I have also donated a Pep Guardiola and an Alex Ferguson portrait to the community, too.”
Also on display at the debut exhibition will be Deggy’s latest portrait of Dame Vivienne Westwood, which celebrates her notable moments. Deggy will be producing prints of this picture, with a portion of the proceeds going to The Vivienne Foundation.
All portraits and artworks on display at The Class of May 19th exhibition will be available to purchase on a first come, first served basis.
