Free Creative Festival comes to Glossop!

March 31, 2025

Glossop is gearing up to be one of the six county-wide creative hubs for the Derbyshire Makes festival on 15th and 16th April.

Derbyshire Makes is a brand-new, three-year cultural programme, which kicks off with the exciting free festival at various locations around the county. Organised by High Peak Community Arts, the Glossop leg of the celebration will bring together artists, makers, and the community to explore creativity - right in the centre of town in Norfolk Square.

What’s On

Highlights of the free two-day festival include The Cat and The Swift, an enchanting puppet performance celebrating bird migration, and Sound Tapestry, a unique auditory experience capturing the sounds of everyday life in Glossop.

Families can also enjoy hands-on workshops such as Pop Up Storytelling and Cyanotype Sun Pictures, encouraging creativity and exploration.

For those who love performance, the festival will showcase a special performance line-pp featuring music, storytelling, and puppetry, as well as the Gruesome Glossop Film Screening, a fun and imaginative take on local history.

Plus, technology enthusiasts can immerse themselves in Virtual Norfolk Square, an interactive VR experience, while those with an interest in heritage and textiles can take part in the Dare to Dream Workshop, creating flags inspired by Derbyshire’s rich history.

The programme’s very own mobile workshop and gallery on wheels, The Makory, will also be there with never-before-seen objects about Glossop from the collections of Derby Museums and the Derbyshire Records Office.

About Derbyshire Makes

With a vibrant mix of live performances, drop-in creative sessions, and community-driven experiences, Derbyshire Makes promises to be an unforgettable celebration of local talent, history and artistic expression.

Derbyshire Makes extends far beyond Glossop, launching simultaneously in six creative hubs across the county: Bolsover, Chesterfield, Cromford Mills, Heanor, Glossop, and Swadlincote. A mobile workshop and gallery on wheels, The Makory, will take creativity on the road, while a countywide mass-making project will invite thousands to participate in hands-on making.

Beyond the opening festival, Derbyshire Makes will continue year-round with an inspiring lineup of walks, talks, exhibitions, markets, and workshops - celebrating the region’s rich legacy of innovation and craftsmanship. From the world's first water-powered mills to the birthplace of Vivienne Westwood, Derbyshire has always been a place that makes - and this festival invites everyone to take part.

The Derbyshire Makes festival will take place on 15th and 16th April in Norfolk Square, Glossop.  For more information, visit www.derbyshiremakes.com and follow @DerbyshireMakes on socials.
