Derbyshire Open Arts is returning to Glossop on the spring bank holiday weekend; 27th - 29th May. The annual roving art event features exhibitions by local artists and makers, many of whom open their studios to the public or exhibit with others in a local venue. It gives visitors an opportunity to see the breadth of art that is created in Glossop, to meet the creators, and to purchase or commission works directly from the makers.
This year, there will be exhibits at venues including Victoria Hall and KIN.DER, and participating artists include Heather Jones, Jean Hobson, Adrian Holt and Kay Stowell.
This week, we take a look at three of the artists who will be exhibiting their creativity for Derbyshire Open Arts at KIN.DER, on Arundel Street.
Richard Knox
Richard Knox is an artist, musician and print maker. His artistic practice focuses predominantly on abstract monoprinting, often using an instinctive, expressive mixed-media approach that leans on a gestural technique to create textured pieces that appear both stark and detailed in equal measures. Richard’s work has also featured on numerous album sleeves and gig posters over the years.
In 2021 Richard co-founded KIN.DER, a screen printing and creative studio that he currently runs and works from in Glossop.
Richard’s exciting new “Land Marks” exhibition features 20 new pieces of monoprint work. Opening on Saturday May 20th for one day, Richard will perform a live solo guitar set in the evening, and the exhibition will then re-open on May 27th through to May 29th as part of Derbyshire Open Arts. Rosie Kent
Rosie Kent is a jewellery maker whose brand handcrafts lavish textures and deliciously shaped jewellery. Rosie strives to create unique timeless pieces that are elegant but most of all comfortable to wear all day long. Each piece is handmade in the KIN.DER studio and the brand is proud to use recycled and ethically sourced materials and be a Fairmined gold licensed brand.
Rosie says: “I like jewellery that tells a story, gives you a glimpse into an ancient world. I believe these textures give the jewellery character and meaning. I also love the ambiguous nature of patterns; the wearer of the piece can take their own meaning, which might be entirely different from my own.”
Lauren Riley
Lauren specialises in screen-printing, exploring mark-making and abstract styles through hands-on printmaking techniques. Producing textiles and artwork for the home, inspired by nature and natural environments, exploring design practices such as Biophilic design and colour psychology to create positive emotional responses and nurture an appreciation for nature. Lauren aims to build a sense of place through print and is often driven by process and her approaches to drawing & photography.
In November 2021, Lauren co-founded KIN.DER, a print studio, Pop-up shop & creative space, on Arundel St, in Glossop. Here, Lauren co-runs the studio, with fellow artist Richard Knox, delivering screen-printing and Risograph printing workshops, in addition to working on her design practice in the print studio.
