Glossop’s Ghislaine Howard is among a hand-curated selection of incredible, notable British artists whose works will be on display at the Contemporary Six gallery, Manchester, from Saturday 25th March - 12th April.
The exhibition, entitled “Modern British” is an amazing opportunity to view a selection of esteemed Modern British artists working in a multitude of mediums, spanning the course of 70 years.
Ghislaine’s artworks, including “Father and Child” (pictured), will be hung amongst works by artists including L.S. Lowry, Henry Moore, David Hockney, Ben Nicholson and Halima Cassell.
Father and Child, painted in 1987, is particularly significant to Howard. It was only in retrospect that Ghislaine realised how by simply painting Michael holding their baby daughter, she was unconsciously introducing a new take on the time worn image of the mother and child. The circular composition is particularly impressive, as the intensity of daughter Cordelia’s gaze reaches out to engage with her father whose presence is registered only by his enfolding arms.
An internationally renowned painter, Ghislaine was named a “Woman of the Year” in 2008 for her contribution to art and society. Her paintings and drawings chart and interpret shared human experience, the movement of the body and the gestures that communicate our feelings. She exhibits widely, and has been shown at many prestigious venues including Manchester Art Gallery, Canterbury Cathedral, Imperial War Museum North and the Wellcome Foundation. Her work may be found in many public and private collections, including the Royal Collection.
Modern British opens to the public on Saturday 25th April and runs to 12 April - Tuesdays to Saturdays.
Contemporary Six - The Gallery can be found at 27 Princess Street, Manchester, open Tuesday - Friday, 10.30am - 5.30pm, and Saturday 10.30am - 5.00pm
