Local artist celebrates national music festival win

January 26, 2023

Mixed media artist Heather Jones from Hadfield, has won a competition to design the official poster for the Africa OYe Festival in Liverpool.

The annual festival is the UK's largest free celebration of African music and culture. The joyous party takes place at Sefton Park on 18th and 19th June.

Heather entered the contest to design the official festival poster, and her impactful, bright design caught the eye of the judges and won the competition. The poster will be printed and sold on the merchandise stall, with profits going back into the festival which is free for all.

Heather's work is multi-layered and incorporates print, paint, inks, collage and photographs. Heather commented: "The festival is a free festival of African music, arts and culture that has been going since 1992 when it began as a series of small gigs in Liverpool city centre. It has grown and gone from strength to strength and is now staged in Sefton Park in Liverpool where it attracts crowds of 100,000 . The amazing thing about it is that it's a free festival and is so community spirited and inclusive for all.

"I have been going to this festival for probably about the past 15 years and it's my absolutely favourite event of the year, it's just a wonderful joyous time. To celebrate the 30th anniversary, Africa OYe announced a competition to design the official poster for the 2022 festival - entered my design and - to my amazement - l won! I am over the moon; it feels like such an honour to have my design representing the festival which l love so much. Any profits from my poster sales will be put back into the festival to keep it free in the future."
