The Stones Project - pop up exhibition and event this weekend!

July 18, 2024

Are you interested in ancient stones and brooding landscapes, both within the Peak District and beyond? The Stones Project is an exciting pop-up exhibition at Victoria Hall this weekend, featuring over 20 North West artists whose work looks at these themes across a wide range of media.

Many of the contributors are based in Glossop and the High Peak and have been inspired by the region’s rich geological rock formations and archaeological, Neolithic stone structures. It’s organised by the Stones Project, co-founded by Fionna Barber, Beccy Kennedy-Schtyk, Martha Lineham and Hannah Singleton who all have strong connections to the High Peak. Beccy is originally from Glossop, and Fionna has lived here since the early 1990s.

The Stones Project are all part of the Visual Culture Research group in the department of Art and Performance at Manchester School of Art. Their research in art and writing explores the visual and sensory qualities and histories of ritual stone structures, both ancient and modern and their first exhibition and sell-out event took place at O! Peste Destroyed, Manchester, in April, centring on stone circles.

This weekend’s larger event at Glossop’s Victoria Hall – The Stones Project Weekender – includes a three-day exhibition of drawing, film, painting, photography, print and sculpture. On the Friday evening there will be presentations from art historian, Dr Fionna Barber (art historian), archaeologist Dr Tim Campbell-Green and participating artist, Ann Carragher plus discussion, in addition to  music, drinks and mingling, which the organisers hope will continue into the weekend.

The event was made possible by funding from Manchester School of Art.

Exhibition opens 7.00pm -9.30pm on Friday 19th July, presentations 7.30pm  (ticketed).
Exhibition continues Saturday and Sunday, 10AM – 4PM. (unticketed). Victoria Hall, Glossop
